Popular weight loss drug to be available in Scottish pharmacies

Wegovy is an injection that suppresses appetite and makes people feel full, which leads to eating less and losing weight.

The diet pill is popular with celebrities, with Tesla founder Elon Musk tweeting in 2022 that Wegovy was partly responsible for his fitness success.

Patients inject themselves with semaglutide, which suppresses appetite by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) released after eating.

Evidence from clinical trials published in 2022 showed that people lost more weight while using semaglutide with supervised weight loss guidance than with support alone.

The drug will now be available in high street pharmacies including Boots.

“Wegovy is a weight loss drug that can help regulate appetite and reduce appetite,” Boots said. “When used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity, and healthy lifestyle choices, it can be a very effective drug to achieve Keep losing weight.”

In 2022, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) said people who received weekly injections lost an average of 12% of their body weight after 68 weeks.

It is currently recommended for adults with at least one weight-related medical condition and a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35.

In some cases, people with a BMI of 30 may be able to use this drug.

Weight-related diseases that qualify obese people include high blood pressure, dyslipidemia (unbalanced or unhealthy cholesterol levels), obstructive sleep apnea, and heart disease.

People can only give semaglutide on prescription as part of a professional weight management service that involves the opinion of multiple professionals and lasts up to two years
