At first, all mice had the same number of monocytes. After fasting for 4 hours, 90% of the monocytes disappeared from the blood of the fasting group. These dropped further after eight hours.
Once the mice were fed again, the monocytes reappeared in the mice's blood. However, this leads to increased levels of inflammation.
“These cells are very important to other diseases such as heart disease or cancer, and understanding how their function is controlled is critical,” said Dr. Swirski.
