Doctors warn weight loss jab being misused in Ireland as ‘quick fix’
Wegovy, a slimming injection expected to be launched in Ireland this year, has been misused as a “quick slimming shot” advertised by celebrities, Irish doctors say.
Wegovy is an injectable prescription drug for obese or overweight adults that can be used to help people lose more than 10% of their body weight in 68 weeks. The drug, also known as semaglutide, is produced by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and was approved for use in Ireland in March last year.
“In Europe, Wegovy has launched in Denmark and Norway. We expect to launch Wegovy in several countries in 2023,” said a company spokesperson.
There is no data on the long-term effects of the drug, but there are side effects
