Doctors raise concerns over diabetes medication popular for weight loss

A commonly used diabetes drug is now gaining popularity for its weight loss effects. It's called Ozempic, but many are concerned about the long-term effects of the drug if patients don't have diabetes.

This injectable medicine works by stimulating hormones to suppress hunger and appetite. Medical experts we spoke to said the drug is safe for medical weight loss, but not everyone should be taking it.

“Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, progressive disease. If you stop taking your medication, those five to ten pounds will come back because it's knocking the balance that's been going on in your body and repairing it. So if you take it away, Is it really worth losing 5 pounds on this drug forever? No, it's not. And there are inventory and supply issues with the drug right now, which is unfortunate,” says Rachel Millard, director of weight management at Desert Regional Medical Center.
