Can Taking Wellbutrin Really Help With Weight Loss?

The weight loss benefits of Wellbutrin were first demonstrated in a clinical trial of the drug (per ro). During that time period, 28 percent of patients were found to have lost 5 pounds or more while taking Wellbutrin. In addition, 35 percent of patients taking tricyclic antidepressants gained weight compared with 9 percent of those taking Wellbutrin.

A 2016 study published in the “Journal of Clinical Medicine” further confirmed Wellbutrin's efficacy as a weight loss drug. The study showed that non-smokers who took Wellbutrin for two years lost an average of about 7 pounds. Smokers, however, did not experience these effects. During the trial, patients taking fluoxetine (commonly known by the brand name Prozac) gained weight.

In addition to helping patients lose weight, Wellbutrin was also effective in maintaining weight, according to a 2012 study published in the journal Obesity. Wellbutrin users lost between 7 and 10 percent of their body weight while taking the drug, according to the study. After 11 months, they managed to maintain their weight loss.
